The behavior of younger men who think they have the right to treat older, wiser, and more experienced men of God with disrespect has always bothered me.
I am appalled at the pride, immaturity that fuels their actions. I don’t like bullys, regardless of their age.
And I hope they find the godly wisdom needed to correct their ways.
Three decades of counseling hundreds of individuals and families has left me with clearer vision than I care to have, at times. I see through things, see the underlying issues, the smoke screens, and the irrational thinking.
All the things that a good professional therapist is supposed to see. But there are times I’d rather not notice.
God has plenty to say about these behaviors in His Word. “You shall rise up before the grayheaded and honor the aged, and you shall revere your God; I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:32 (NASB)
You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders, and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. 1 Peter 5:5 (NASB)
Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers. 1 Timothy 5:1 (ESV).
In other words—honor the aged!
