Even to Our Graying Years

You who have been borne by Me from birth and have been carried from the womb; even to your old age I will be the same, and even to your graying years I will bear you!  I have done it, and I will carry you!  And I will bear you and I will deliver you!  Isaiah 46:3,4

For those of us who have had the good fortune of following Christ since our childhood, it is an interesting thing to reflect on God’s ways with us throughout our lives.  In this verse from Isaiah, God is speaking for Himself, about Himself.  He is telling us in no uncertain terms that He will not change.  He will be the same – even until our graying years.  He adamantly says, “I have done it and I will carry you!”

As I look back over the last half of a century, which makes me sound really old, I can attest to God’s unchanging presence in my life…bearing me, carrying me.  I’ve been all over the place at times, but He has always remained a steady force of strength and a refuge from life’s storms and uncertainties.

Reflecting on His faithfulness over all of these years gives me a sense of peace and trust for the future.  As my grandmother once told me at the age of 94, “Growing old isn’t for the faint of heart.”  God knows what we need during each season of our lives.  In our youth we desperately need His wisdom and direction.  During our middle years we hold onto His steady hand to help us stay the course and run our race.  And then…we need Him to be our strength, our peace, and our hope as He gently reminds us that He’s still with us – even to our graying years.
